28 Black Women is an ongoing portrait series dedicated to the women who, unbeknownst to them, sparked changes in my perspective and provided wisdom through their creative spirit. I use India ink on Bristol board for delicate portraiture balanced by custom designed boarders and hand drawn typography to solidify their presence.
The NATURAL/ORDER series is a contemplation on landscape and nature contained in the spaces humans occupy. Visualized through use of oil on canvas and drawing inspiration from the Art Deco period of design and various African aesthetic styles, I join symmetry and asymmetry to examine the relationship between the environment, patterns, and the desire for order.
Shadows of Yesterday
Shadows of Yesterday is an intimate capture of feelings, situations and deeper social context of various forms of childhood abuse, utilizing the concept of memories as fragmented shadows. The sensitive nature of trauma is represented through the use of found objects that are consumed and tossed aside without much thought as to where those items come from or end up. As a final act of reaching catharsis all the pieces were destroyed.
